Is it normal to have irregular periods in perimenopause?

Medically reviewed by Dr. Nathan Roth, MDCM, FRCSC, FACOG · Updated 2026-11-01

Is it normal to have irregular periods in perimenopause?

Cycle irregularity is common in perimenopause as ovulation becomes unpredictable. However, very heavy bleeding, bleeding between periods, postcoital bleeding, or any bleeding after confirmed menopause needs evaluation. “Normal perimenopause” never means ignoring anemia or cancer warning signs. HormoneFit’s OB-GYN-led approach is built for this grey zone.

  • Skipped or shorter cycles are common
  • Heavy soaking is not “just hormones” to ignore
  • Postmenopausal bleeding always needs assessment
  • See heavy bleeding article for workup details
