Can I take HRT after a hysterectomy?

Medically reviewed by Dr. Nathan Roth, MDCM, FRCSC, FACOG · Updated 2026-11-01

Can I take HRT after a hysterectomy?

Yes. If the uterus has been removed, systemic estrogen therapy typically does not require a progestogen for endometrial protection. If ovaries were also removed (surgical menopause), symptoms can be abrupt and bone/heart risk counseling is important — many guidelines support estrogen until around the average age of natural menopause when appropriate. HormoneFit tailors estrogen-alone vs estrogen-progestogen to your surgical history.

  • No uterus → progestogen usually not needed for endometrial protection
  • Ovary removal creates abrupt surgical menopause
  • Local vaginal estrogen still helps GSM after hysterectomy
  • Cancer history still modifies choices

Bring your operative report if you can

Knowing whether ovaries and cervix were removed prevents regimen mistakes. If records are unclear, we clarify surgically before finalizing long-term HRT.
