Night sweats in menopause

Medically reviewed by Dr. Nathan Roth, MDCM, FRCSC, FACOG · Updated 2026-11-01

What causes menopause night sweats and how do you stop them?

Night sweats are vasomotor symptoms — the nighttime form of hot flashes — driven by estrogen-related changes in temperature regulation. They fragment sleep and worsen fatigue, mood, and brain fog. Effective treatment targets the flashes themselves (hormone therapy when appropriate, or non-hormonal alternatives) plus sleep hygiene. HormoneFit clinicians tailor options for Ontario women.

  • Night sweats are vasomotor symptoms, not just “being warm in bed”
  • Treating flashes often restores sleep more than sleep aids alone
  • Rule out other causes when atypical (infection, medication, thyroid)
  • Cooler bedroom and moisture-wicking bedding help adjunctively

Impact on health

Repeated awakenings raise next-day accident risk, mood symptoms, and work impairment. Chronic sleep debt also associates with metabolic stress. Treating the underlying vasomotor driver is more rational than only adding sedatives.

Treatment approach

Menopausal hormone therapy remains the most effective therapy for frequent moderate–severe night sweats in eligible women. Non-hormonal agents studied for vasomotor symptoms are alternatives. Cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) helps when insomnia persists after flashes improve.
