Low libido in menopause

Medically reviewed by Dr. Nathan Roth, MDCM, FRCSC, FACOG · Updated 2026-11-01

Why does libido drop in menopause and what helps?

Low desire in midlife is multifactorial: falling sex hormones, painful sex from GSM, poor sleep, mood changes, medications, and relationship stress. Treating dryness and pain often restores desire. When hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) persists, clinicians may consider evidence-informed options including testosterone in selected women — not pellet implants. HormoneFit assesses causes before treatment.

  • Fix GSM and sleep before assuming “low testosterone” alone
  • HSDD is a clinical diagnosis after other causes are addressed
  • Testosterone, if used, is for HSDD — not energy or weight loss marketing
  • HormoneFit does not offer pellet therapy

A stepwise clinical approach

International menopause guidance emphasizes identifying reversible contributors first. Vaginal estrogen or moisturizers for dyspareunia, treating depression/anxiety, reviewing medications (e.g., some SSRIs), and counseling are core steps.

Transdermal testosterone has evidence for postmenopausal HSDD in carefully selected women, with monitoring for androgenic side effects. Compounded pellets lack the same regulatory evidence base and are not part of HormoneFit’s approach.
