Anxiety in perimenopause and menopause

Medically reviewed by Dr. Nathan Roth, MDCM, FRCSC, FACOG · Updated 2026-11-01

Can menopause cause anxiety?

Yes. Perimenopause is a high-risk window for new or worsening anxiety and panic-like symptoms, driven by hormone fluctuation, sleep loss, and life stressors. Treatment may include psychotherapy, exercise, treating night sweats, and medication when needed — sometimes HRT for eligible women with concurrent vasomotor symptoms. HormoneFit evaluates anxiety in context, not in isolation.

  • Perimenopause can unmask or amplify anxiety disorders
  • Sleep and flash treatment often reduce daytime anxiety
  • SSRIs/SNRIs can treat both mood and some vasomotor symptoms
  • Suicidal thoughts or acute panic need urgent local care / 911

Clinical approach

Screen for depression, substance use, thyroid disease, and medication effects. Validate that midlife anxiety is real and treatable. Combine lifestyle, psychological care, and medical therapy as indicated.
