What is perimenopause?

What is perimenopause?

Perimenopause is the transitional phase leading up to menopause, typically lasting 4–8 years. Hormone levels fluctuate, periods become irregular, and symptoms such as hot flashes, sleep problems, mood changes, and brain fog often begin. HormoneFit provides evidence-based virtual perimenopause care for women across Ontario.

  • Occurs before the final menstrual period
  • Often lasts 4–8 years with fluctuating estrogen
  • Symptoms can start years before periods stop
  • Treatment can include HRT, non-hormonal options, and lifestyle support
  • Ontario women can access HormoneFit physicians virtually

Why perimenopause feels unpredictable

During perimenopause, ovarian hormone production becomes inconsistent. Estradiol and progesterone levels can swing day to day, which explains irregular bleeding, heavier or lighter periods, and intermittent hot flashes. Many women in their early 40s are surprised that cognitive changes, anxiety, or sleep disruption are related to this transition — not "just stress."

Common perimenopause symptoms

Hot flashes, night sweats, cycle changes, low libido, vaginal dryness, mood swings, irritability, brain fog, joint aches, and midsection weight changes are common. Symptom intensity varies widely. HormoneFit's symptoms guide outlines how our Ontario physicians approach each presentation.

Can you treat perimenopause with HRT?

Yes — when clinically appropriate. Hormone therapy can stabilize symptoms during the transition for suitable candidates. Non-hormonal medications, vaginal estrogen for local symptoms, sleep strategies, and lifestyle changes are also part of evidence-based care. Individual risk assessment matters; see Is HRT safe?
