Why does menopause disrupt sleep?

Medically reviewed by Dr. Nathan Roth, MDCM, FRCSC, FACOG · Updated 2026-07-26

Why does menopause disrupt sleep?

Menopause often disrupts sleep through night sweats, hormonal effects on sleep architecture, mood changes, and aging-related sleep shifts. Treating vasomotor symptoms (including with HRT when appropriate), CBT-I strategies, and sleep hygiene can help. HormoneFit evaluates sleep problems for women across Ontario.

  • Night sweats are a major driver of awakenings
  • Estrogen and progesterone changes affect sleep quality
  • Anxiety and mood shifts compound insomnia
  • Cooling the bedroom and consistent schedules help
  • CBT-I is effective without medication side effects for many

What to try first

Cool sleeping environment, moisture-wicking bedding, limiting evening alcohol and caffeine, and treating hot flashes. If insomnia persists, ask about CBT-I and whether vasomotor treatment or HRT is appropriate. Book HormoneFit.
