How does menopause affect bone health?

Medically reviewed by Dr. Nathan Roth, MDCM, FRCSC, FACOG · Updated 2026-07-26

How does menopause affect bone health?

Estrogen helps maintain bone density. During the menopause transition, bone loss accelerates, raising osteoporosis and fracture risk. Prevention includes weight-bearing and resistance exercise, adequate calcium and vitamin D, not smoking, limiting excess alcohol, and — for some women — hormone therapy or bone-specific medications. HormoneFit discusses bone health as part of Ontario menopause care.

  • Bone loss speeds up around menopause
  • DEXA screening timing depends on risk factors
  • Strength training and impact exercise protect bone
  • Calcium and vitamin D support, but are not enough alone
  • HRT can help bone density when used for appropriate indications
