Is HRT covered by OHIP in Ontario?

Medically reviewed by Dr. Nathan Roth, MDCM, FRCSC, FACOG · Updated 2026-11-01

Is hormone therapy or menopause care covered by OHIP?

In Ontario, medically necessary in-person physician consultations and many related investigations can be insured under OHIP when clinically indicated. Hormone replacement therapy medications themselves are not “free through OHIP” in the way a doctor’s visit may be — drug coverage depends on the Ontario Drug Benefit program, private plans, or out-of-pocket payment. Virtual HormoneFit membership visits and platform benefits are uninsured private-pay services and are not billed to OHIP. HormoneFit separates these pathways clearly so patients know what they are booking.

  • In-person physician visits may be OHIP-insured when medically indicated
  • Prescription HRT is a medication cost — coverage varies by drug plan
  • Virtual HormoneFit membership care is private-pay / uninsured
  • Labs ordered as insured services follow provincial rules when eligible
  • Call the clinic for in-person OHIP pathways; book online for virtual membership care

Two different questions patients ask

People often ask “Is HRT covered by OHIP?” when they mean three different things: (1) Is the doctor’s visit insured? (2) Are blood tests insured? (3) Is the estrogen or progesterone prescription paid by the province? Those answers differ.

In-person physician care

When you see a physician in person for a medically indicated menopause assessment — including history, examination, and counseling — that encounter may be billed as an insured service under OHIP according to provincial schedules and clinical appropriateness. HormoneFit’s Clinical Symptom Relief pathway is designed as this in-person starting point and is arranged by contacting the clinic, not as a self-serve virtual checkout.

Virtual HormoneFit membership care

Telehealth visits and ongoing membership benefits delivered through the HormoneFit platform are uninsured private-pay services. Membership fees pay for those virtual services only and are unrelated to any separate in-person OHIP-insured care you may receive. This mirrors how many Ontario practices distinguish insured encounters from uninsured block-fee or membership offerings under CPSO guidance.

What about the hormone prescriptions?

Estradiol patches, oral estradiol, micronized progesterone, and vaginal estrogen products are medications. OHIP does not automatically make prescriptions free. Coverage depends on whether you qualify for the Ontario Drug Benefit (e.g., age 65+, certain programs) or have private insurance. Your clinician can discuss regulated body-identical options and cost considerations during a visit.

Practical next step
